This tribute is dedicated to my uncle Manny, who bravely fought his battle with cancer. Manny had a very bubbly personality, and even during his toughest times, he never let it bog him down. He was passionate about life, loved to draw, and always made those around him laugh.
One of my most cherished memories with my uncle was visiting him in Florida a month before he passed away. We squeezed so much into that visit and even had the chance to share a smoke one last time. He had been battling cancer for many years, first diagnosed in 2018. The disease became more aggressive during the pandemic. I’m grateful for that final visit; without it, I would never have been able to forgive myself.
I think of Manny and miss him every day. I feel closest to him when I listen to disco, house, and freestyle music, genres he loved. A mural of him now stands in his hometown, ensuring that even those who didn’t know him will recognize his spirit when they walk by that beautiful piece of art.
If I could give one piece of advice, it would be to cherish your loved ones and tell them how you feel. Tomorrow is not promised, so make the most of every moment.
In loving memory of Uncle Manny, may his laughter and spirit continue to inspire us all.
